Are Glass Block Windows Energy Efficient. Making your home more energy efficient is not only good for the planet, it’s good for your wallet. Whether you’re installing replacement windows or choosing windows for a home that’s yet to be built, glass block windows are a solid, energy efficient choice.
With energy efficiency and thermal transmittance values similar to double pane windows, windows made with glass block are not only energy efficient but they’re beautiful. Glass block windows effectively eliminate the need for storm windows and reduce the energy required to heat and cool your home.
In many cases, with the increased light transmission these windows provide, you may find you don’t have to switch on overhead lights or lamps as often.
Where to Install Glass Block Windows
You can install glass block windows anywhere you might install a standard window. Some of the more common locations include:
- Basement
- Bathroom
- Kitchen
- Laundry Room
- Front Entryway (Door sidelights and transom)
Anywhere that you want to add privacy and increase natural light is a good location.

Specialty Windows
There are also specialty glass block windows that you would buy more for their tornado-resistant and hurricane-resistant qualities, but these glass block windows are energy efficient as well, due to the same reasons outlined above.
If you live in a tornado prone area, or anywhere that hurricanes have made landfall, you may want to consider replacing at least some of your existing windows, or using these windows in a new build. In some locations of Florida, local building codes require impact resistant window systems.
